For the past several weeks, our team at Plastic Oceans Canada has done a stellar job of pulling together a great resource for those interested in fighting for a healthier planet. It’s a collection of blog posts that provides a virtual tour of organizations working to end plastic pollution and/or advocating for healthier oceans, lakes, and rivers across The Great White North.
A citizen science program to clean up Canada. Scavenger hunt style plastic clean-up where you have to find 1 piece of each type of plastic to earn your badge.
In honour of 3-time cross country runner and litter picker-upper, we are welcoming YOU Canada to help Andy Sward complete the largest consolidated clean up in Canada.
With the Run Against Plastic postponed and social distancing limiting large public clean-ups. We need everyone to help!
Step 1 – Download the Citizen Science Form
Step 2 – Find 1 piece of each type of plastic and note what you find.
Step 3 – Submit the form to citizenscience@plasticoceans.ca.
Complete this by July 10th and enter to win an educational expedition for 2 for 5 days on Vancouver island!
Private presentation for 20 Girl Guides done over Zoom.
We hope everyone has come through the recent months in health and with a happy heart. In these trying times, it’s been extremely difficult to get a clear understanding of what we CAN do this year.
We hope this year, on World Oceans Day, and with our economy re-opening, everyone can take a step back and embrace whatever new normal is right for them.
World Oceans Day also kicks off our Make Canada Clean Again initiative.
Imagine a magical island nation where you can swim alone with humpback whales. A place where you can always be assured that the whales will return the same time each year to give birth and nurse their babies.
Even after being lucky enough to witness this place with my own eyes, year after year for over a decade, I still find it hard to believe such a heavenly/magical place like this exists right here on earth.
Sustainability Hacks is a code-free hackathon that brings local sustainability-driven organizations, UBC faculty members, and ambitious students together for a weekend of synergy and innovation. Students will work collaboratively in teams of 3-6, in consultation with faculty members, to “hack” a solution to an issue that a community organization (such as Plastic Oceans Canada) faces.

Get the BIG IDEAS flowing, inspire INQUIRY, and help students find SOLUTIONS!
This is an interactive workshop that assists individuals and businesses with changing their plastic habits! First, we discuss how pervasive plastic is in our daily lives and the problems plastic presents. Next, participants engage in activities to help them reduce the amount of plastic they consume and develop better recycling habits. Together we discuss reusable alternatives and strategies through collaborative brainstorming sessions. During these activities we encourage participants to share their ideas and provide feedback to help us find new solutions.
